FASNY Launches First-Ever Youth Recruitment Tool Kit

(12/15/14 – fireengineering.com) As an additional way to help fire departments boost the numbers of volunteer firefighters across the state, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) today unveiled a brand new initiative aimed at recruiting a new generation of future volunteer firefighters. The “Youth Tool Kit” is a one-stop-shop for fire departments across the state to attract new members within a younger demographic.

“Firefighters need the right equipment to get the job done; and in this case, we are providing the tools needed to help recruit a new generation of volunteers,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “Recruitment is one of our top priorities, and we will use every weapon in our arsenal to help attract new members. We encourage all local departments to utilize the tool kit as part of their recruitment efforts.”

Through an innovative new webpage, fire departments have the ability to download multi-media presentations, talking points, brochures and customizable presentations which allow virtually any fire department to help attract a younger generation of volunteers.

These materials will help fire personnel when they attend high school job fairs, or conduct fire safety presentations in the communities where they serve. They are especially designed to highlight the benefits of serving your community and specifically aimed at attracting youth in the volunteer fire service.

It is believed that in the late 1990’s there were approximately 120,000 volunteer firefighters in New York State. That number fell as low as 85,000 in 2010. In the past 4 years, more than 12,000 new recruits have signed up but that number barely offsets the losses due to age, retirements and population shifts.

This new initiative will help attract new, young members who will serve as volunteer firefighters for years to come. The website was designed and implemented by Syracuse-based ABC Creative Group and can be found at http://www.recruitny.org/youth
